Cleaning Up AWS Route 53 and EC2 Resources

Why Clean Up?

After testing Amazon Route 53 routing policies, it's essential to clean up unused resources to avoid unnecessary AWS charges.

Cost Breakdown:

• Domain Name:
  • Costs $12 per year (or more, depending on the domain).
  • Cannot be deleted but can be set to not renew if no longer needed.
• Hosted Zone:
  • Costs $0.50 per month.
  • Can be deleted if no longer needed.
• EC2 Instances:
  • Charges accrue based on instance type, uptime, and region.
  • Should be terminated when no longer in use.
• Load Balancer (ALB):
  • Costs per hour + per GB of data transferred.
  • Should be deleted, along with target groups.

Steps to Clean Up AWS Resources

1️⃣ Delete the Hosted Zone in Route 53

⚠️ Before deleting the hosted zone, remove all records except the default NS and SOA records.

1. Navigate to AWS Route 53 → Hosted Zones.
2. Select the hosted zone.
3. Delete all custom DNS records.
4. Click Delete Hosted Zone.

2️⃣ Terminate EC2 Instances

1. Go to EC2 Dashboard → Instances.
2. Identify the instances in different regions:
   • EU-Central-1 (Frankfurt)
   • US-East-1
   • AP-Southeast-1
